The Zambia Institute of Animal Health is the only institution in Zambia that offers a two year certificate course in animal health and production. The institute is in the process of rolling out a Diploma in Animal Health and Production before the end of this year (2019). The institute is wholly owned by the Government of the Republic of Zambia under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.
ZIAH was established in 1943 and was previously known as Veterinary Training School. At that time, the institute was conducting training for African Veterinary Assistants and had a capacity for 30 students per intake, over the years this has modestly increased to a 120 students per intake. In 1970-71, training for Laboratory and Tsetse Control Assistants was introduced. These two courses were suspended in 1993. The Laboratory Assistants’ Course has since been re-introduced and the Diploma in Animal Health and Production is set to be introduced by the end of this year (2019).
